St. Catherine of Sienna said, ‘Be who you were created to be, and you will set the world on fire.’ That is how I am attempting to journey through this life – always learning, discovering and becoming more of who I truly am. To live true to that and then helping others to do the same.
The discovery of and living true to who I am created to be is made all the more possible by sharing life with others in four specific spaces:
- In the vulnerability of life and love with my husband who fully sees me, fully knows me, yet loves me unconditionally and is the greatest champion of the steps I take towards being all that I have the potential to be.
- Life lived alongside a truly authentic, small community who are all different from me yet share similar values. We call ourselves “limping pilgrims” as together we learn, discover, give one another space and grace and speak truth into one another’s lives with deep kindness.
- Monthly conversations with my spiritual director who listens compassionately and asks me wise questions which help me to live with courage, compassion, truth and vulnerability.
For me as a person of faith, this “becoming” is enabled by Jesus Christ, the one I trust in and follow, who dances within the above spaces, permeates all things and invites me to live this life courageously and wholeheartedly with the entirety of my being.
My greatest longing is to see others become the truest version of themselves, to know the freedom of that, and to live this life wholeheartedly. I also long for others to discover that their life’s story is an important part of a bigger story, that they might live with a deeper sense of purpose and connection and experience greater wholeness.
This is why I am a spiritual director and have trained as a chaplain – so that I can journey with others, listen to the story of their lives and create a safe space for them to connect with their own souls and, if they so choose, with the “Holy Other” of their faith.

“The self that begins the spiritual journey is the self of our own creation, the self we thought ourselves to be. This is the self that dies on the journey. The self that arrives is the self that was loved into existence by Divine Love. This is the person we were destined from eternity to become…” David Benner, The Gift of Being Yourself
